You CAN do Disney with an infant!

So now that the bundle of joy is here, it’s only natural for you to begin planning (at least in your head while you’re up at 2am with your infant) his or her first trip to Disney! I knew I couldn’t wait to share the joy of the Mouse with my son when he was born. My little guy had terrible acid reflux along with colic that was so bad I never thought I’d make it until my husband would come home and take over for me each night. What got me through was doing tons of research on how to travel to Disney with an infant. I always thought to myself, “Hey, if the kid cries, he might as well be someplace with lots of other crying kids!” Sure, Thomas won’t remember a lick of the vacation, but I needed that trip. I had the perfect answer to, “What will you celebrate?” My beautiful baby boy!

If you think that traveling to Disney with an infant is difficult or takes the fun out of things, I’m happy to say you’re wrong! With these little tips, you too can have the time of your life!

Ship to your hotel – This is a HUGE life saver if you are flying. With the outrageous prices the airlines are charging these days for extra bags, you don’t want to have to pack any extra stuff to fly down with you. About a week before you leave, take your package of anything that you’ll need for the week but won’t be bringing home (diapers, wipes, baby food, disposable spoons, bowls, and bibs, etc.) to the post office! Your package should be addressed as follows:

Guest Name, Arriving on XX/XX/20XX

Resort Name

Resort Address (this can be found on the resort’s website or by calling the resort)

Sure, you can grocery shop when you get down to Orlando but with the parks calling your name, do you really want to be at the grocery store paying their prices? Also, the less you have to carry with you to the airport on your day of travel, the better! It saves SO much stress at the airport when you just have to deal with you, your bag of clothes, your stroller and your baby!

Bring your own stroller
– This will save you money on the stroller rental at the park which would cost you $15 per day for a single-passenger stroller and $31 per day for a double-passenger. Not only that but at the end of each day, you need to return the stroller which may result in your tired self carrying a sleeping infant or toddler to the bus stop and back to your room. The rental strollers are not appropriate for an infant – they are more suited for a bigger toddler and kid. Besides the money aspect, your baby will appreciate his or her own stroller. My son was used to his stroller from being in it for countless miles here at home. If he became fussy or overstimulated, putting him in the stroller gave him a sense of security that calmed him right down (and often put him to sleep!)

Put your name all over the stroller! In fact, putting a sign on the stroller is a fun and cute way to ensure that nobody walks off with it.

Don’t overpack– Going back to luggage, you want to carry as little as possible since you’ll have the stroller and the baby now! Pack what you think you need for the vacation and take half of it out of the bag! Laundry facilities are available at every resort and they are great! After you get back from the parks, just throw a load in, grab a snack and before you know it the wash will be done. My son had terrible reflux so we did A LOT of laundry and it still didn’t deter from the vacation. Being able to use the laundry allows you to take so much less. And less of anything just equals less STRESS! Also? Less clothes means you can bring more souvenirs home with you!

Baby Center – The baby centers can be your best friend! Regardless if you are nursing or not, these quiet areas (one in each park) will be your saving grace when you and/or your baby need a break from the hustle and bustle of the parks. They are private. They are air conditioned. They have friendly Cast Members ready to help you. They have rocking chairs and beautiful high chairs. They even have a little entertainment area for an older child to chill out. My husband and I used these all the time. Sure, there are changing tables in every bathroom in the parks but the Baby Center ones were so clean and the environment there was so peaceful. There is an area for nursing moms which is very helpful for the time when an infant becomes a little too enthralled with his or her surroundings to concentrate on feeding! My son appreciated the quiet time so he could get down to the business of eating.

Baby Carrier
– Besides a stroller being a nice comfortable place for your baby to hang out, a great carrier can provide that extra snuggle that he or she might need. Having your baby in a carrier (in this case, a forward-facing carrier like a Baby Bjorn) for the rides allows you to enjoy the rides yourself without having to worry about a squirmy infant trying to get out of your grasp. My son loved being in the Bjorn on the rides – he could see everything, move his hands and his feet as he pleased, and it made me feel more secure taking him on the rides like Dumbo, Peter Pan, etc. We also took an Ergo with us as well which I could put my son in when he wanted to take a snooze. He could have a quiet and darkened place against Mom’s chest and we could in the meantime go on Spaceship Earth while he slept on me! The carriers are so useful! Just make sure to practice getting your baby in and out before you go so you don’t waste too much time finagling around with the straps!

Rides – Speaking of rides, don’t think that your baby is too small and he or she won’t be able to enjoy any of them. Not true! There are SO many rides and attractions that your baby can be a part of. Basically any ride that does not have a height restriction is a-ok for your infant. Not only that but the shows are also fun for the whole family. Sure, my son doesn’t remember “it’s a small world” but he had a BLAST looking back and forth at all the singing children!

Baby Swap
– And just because you have an infant with you does NOT mean that YOU can’t enjoy the thrill rides! Sure, you won’t be taking baby on Tower of Terror but you CAN take part in baby swap which really is one of Disney’s best kept secrets! What happens is you and your spouse and child go to the Cast Member at the start of the line (in this case, Tower of Terror). Let the Cast Member know you would like to do the baby swap. If you want to ride first, your spouse will be given a ticket that looks like a Fastpass. Your spouse will hang out with the baby while you go and enjoy the ride! After you finish, you can meet up with your spouse and baby, take the baby and your spouse can use his Fastpass ticket to go directly on the ride and avoid the line! It’s great! You get the best of both worlds! You get to ride the smaller rides but also you can experience the thrill rides just like you did before you had children (although be careful – motherhood seems to have given me some extra scaredycat-ness that I didn’t have before my son came along!)

Traveling to Disney with an infant is so easy. Taking a few extra steps in preparation makes it a breeze to enjoy every aspect of Disney and even some new ones that you wouldn’t otherwise know without having your baby with you. A great incentive to travel with your infant is the fact that until they are two years old, they can fly for free and until they are three years old their park tickets are free! For that reason, my husband and I have three trips planned already in the next year!

There are so many other tips I could probably rattle off after having taken my infant son to Disney but these seem to be the biggest ones. The most important one, however, is to HAVE FUN and TAKE PICTURES!!!

*My Disney experiences have given me great insight to tips and tricks for getting the very most out of a Disney vacation. I want to share this valuable information with you and help you discover the Disney magic in your own way.

Happy Planning!

How to be Pregnant and Happy at Disney Resorts

How to be Pregnant and Happy at Disney resorts

Awaiting a new bundle of joy is a magical, amazing experience in itself. But while you're waiting...why not have some fun and relaxation at Disney! If you're healthy and have no pregnancy complications (and your doc gives the ok), don't shy away from some fun in the parks!

I spent my entire pregnancy hanging out at Disneyland. About once a week I'd go get my dose of Disney magic. It was the one thing that kept me from going completely nuts during a rough pregnancy! And oh my stars...the FOOD there satisfies any and every craving! Visiting Disney resorts during pregnancy doesn't mean refraining from all attractions and just sitting on a bench all day...there is so much to do! And here's a guide to staying comfortable, safe, healthy, and HAPPY while visiting Disney during your pregnancy.

Of course, ALWAYS speak with your doctor to make sure you are healthy and able to fully enjoy your vacation at Disney!

Here's some tips!

1. Clothing: Comfy shoes are a must...good support, shoes that allow your feet to breathe but also won't slip around easily. Uncomfortable clothing or any article that you would have to keep tugging at or adjusting isn't going to be fun. Go for comfort, number one rule!

2. Take it Easy: Remember to take it easy...take some breaks along the way! There are many benches to sit and relax under a tree. Grab a snack! There are entertaining attractions that have no wait lines...just walk right into the Main Street Cinema on Main Street U.S.A to sit in the cool, dark theater and watch black & white Mickey cartoons...as well as Disneyland's The Disney Gallery on Main Street offers beautiful and exciting Disney art by many different artists. The lobby of Great Moments With Mr Lincoln (on Main Street, adjoining with The Disney Gallery) is also filled with art-pieces and offers places to sit and watch a short film hosted by Steve Martin and Donald Duck. Or you can relax bayside in Disney's California Adventure's Paradise Pier area. Disney's Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular at California Adventure's Hyperion Theater is a great place to relax and see a cool show!

You can also rent wheelchairs and electric wheelchairs. Taking a time-out to go back to the hotel room for a nap or a relaxing float in the pool is also refreshing!

3. Visit the restrooms often. Enough said.

4. Keep hydrated! This is always important, for everyone at any time...but especially when pregnant! Chilled bottled water is sold throughout the park, as well as there are water fountains. I liked to keep a bottle with me and refill it with cold water throughout the day.

5. Foods/Snacks: Disney food is a pregnant woman's dream...every food craving you could possibly have can be indulged here! Turkey legs, churros, chimichangas, nachos, ice cream, but there are also HEALTHY snacks as well! Fresh fruit carts are all over...all I wanted when I was pregnant was ice cold fruit...those fruit vendors knew me by name! mmm, and Dole Pineapple Whips....*drool*

6. And finally...Attractions! Never ignore any warnings or concerns from your doctor about your pregnancy...and also pay attention to any attraction warnings and recommendations as well. Of course, most of the slow and steady dark rides are perfectly fine...and there are other rides you can go on as well!

The attractions that are officially restricted are:

Space Mountain

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Splash Mountain

Star Tours

Matterhorn

Indiana Jones Adventure

Gadget's Go Coaster

Autopia

and at California Adventure:

Grizzly River Run

California Screamin

Silly Symphonies Swings

Maliboomer

Mulholland Madness

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Tuck n Roll's Drive 'Em Buggies

Also, WDW's list of restricted attractions...

Magic Kingdom:

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Space Mountain

Splash Mountain

Tomorrowland Indy Speedway

The Barnstormer (at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm)

Epcot:

Mission: SPACE

Test Track

Disney's Hollywood Studios:

Star Tours

Rock n Roller Coaster

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Animal Kingdom:

DINOSAUR

Expedition Everest

Kali River Rapids

Kilimanjaro Safari

Primeval Whirl

Some other attractions may make you weary, but it all depends on you and your pregnancy...I personally rode Pirates of the Caribbean millions of times while I was pregnant...but I wasn't totally comfortable with going on Soarin' Over California. So just follow your instincts and what you feel comfortable with!

There are also multiple entertaining shows, parades, exhibits to explore at any of the resorts...not to mention the amazing Downtown Disney area at both Disneyland Resort and WDW Resort...which provides many more options of shopping and dining, as well as live music, and a movie theater that shows current films.

The seating is rows of picnic tables covered in an outdoor setting. On each table they have your condiments and paper towels in a wooden caddy. Disneyland Training: Seasons

There are a few decisions you have to make before you go- when you are going, where you are going to stay and how many days you will stay there and buy tickets for and these things will all affect your budget. Then we can cover what to do when you are there. Hopefully when reading this series, you'll get some answers to these questions and be ready for your next Disneyland trip.

Seasons:

Disneyland Resort has 2 main seasons: Peak and Off-peak.

Peak season

These are most commonly times when kids are out of school for holidays and breaks- June through Labor day weekend, Spring break (weeks before and after Easter), Thanksgiving, week before Christmas through New Year's and most 3-day weekends.

Pros- all rides and shows are open
Cons- biggest crowds, longer waits, higher prices for hotels/flights

If your travel period is set and you need to go during peak season, plan to be there on certain days of the week like Tuesdays-Thursdays, so it will be less crowded, because Mondays and Fridays are right after/before the weekend- people only have to take one or two days off of work and usually leave before the middle of the week. This also hits two possible "Magic Morning" days, which will get you in the park an hour earlier than other guests either on Tuesday or Thursday (more about then when we cover if you are staying on-property or have a park-hopper pass) and one time with "Toontown Morning Madness" (special pass only) on Wednesday.

You will definitely need to take advantage of the Fast-Pass rides to see more (also will go into more detail later) but it will be a time-saver when it comes to big crowds.
This scene always gets me in the Holiday spirit

Off-peak season

Usually runs after New Year's until President's day weekend (mid-Feb), week after Easter until Memorial day weekend (end of May), mid-September through mid-October and after Thanksgiving until week before Christmas.

Pros- less crowds, lower prices for hotels/flights
Cons- some rides are down for refurbishment/maintenance, shows aren't daily

Any periods not listed are average attendance- after President's day weekend until the week before Easter, Sundays not during Peak season, Memorial day until school is out and mid-October to Thanksgiving. If you can handle a little more crowds and want less cost than peak season- these are the times to go.

We like to go during off-peak season. Even Sundays during off-peak season (average attendance since it's open to Southern California pass-holders) are too much for us. My favorite time to go is the first of December when the holiday decorations are already up which really gets me in the holiday spirit but without all the peak crowds. The evenings and mornings are about 40 degrees, which is below our Hawaii average, but it gives it an experience that is new for us- bundling up and wearing layers. And we still want to try the Halloween party at California Adventure (mid-September through Halloween). This is the only time an adult can wear Disney costumes around the park. Taking our kids out of school for a week to go on family trips is something we are okay with cause it means we can see more and do more for less cost.

If you can go during off-peak season, staying during part of a weekend, for at least Friday and Saturday is good if you want to view the nightly spectaculars- like Fantasmic or the fireworks over Sleeping Beauty's castle or the new "World of Color" opening in June at California Adventure. These won't run daily like during peak season. Saturdays and Sundays are also "Magic Morning" early entry days, so you can take advantage of having more than one option to get in before the crowds. Friday would be when you could go to the "Mickey's Toontown Morning Madness" parade.

This gives you a good idea of what time of year you will want to go to the Disneyland resort or what to be ready for on the dates you've chosen.
