Disney's Hawaiin Resort, Aulani Open for future reservations on Aug. 2

Aulani Lobby

Disney's new Hawaii resort, Aulani, will be taking it's first hotel reservations on August 2, 2010 for travel starting on August 29, 2011.

The 360 hotel room/481 multi-bedroom vacation villa resort, designed for family travel, has been under construction since last summer on 21 acres of beachfront at West Oahu’s Ko Olina Resort & Marina.

Walt Disney Parks & Resorts first announced the Hawaii resort project in October 2007, shortly after purchasing the Ko Olina acreage. Ground was broken on the project—then called Disney Vacation Club Resort Hawaii—in November 2008.

Disney Aulani Pool

Disney’s design plans for the Aulani Resort & Spa include 48,685-square-feet of outdoor features, including a centerpiece “wonderland of water” featuring snorkeling lagoons, river pools, sunset-facing hot tubs, waterfalls, water slides, fishponds, pathways and tide pools stocked with native sea life. The resort will also include an 18,000-foot family-friendly spa, two restaurants, kids clubs, wedding lawn and a 14,545-square-foot convention and banquet facility. The resort also claims one of the man-made crescent lagoons along the Ko Olina shoreline.

Disney has said that it plans to market the Hawaii resort toward luxury family travel.

Hotel rooms available to book: August 2, 2010

Resort Open for Hotel guest stays: August 29, 2011

Disney's Magical Express

When using Disney's Magical Express, your Disney experience begins right at the airport. After debarking from the plane, there is no need to stop and collect your luggage. All you have to do is head straight to the Disney's Magical Express Welcome Center. Once there, friendly cast members will check you in and direct you to the right bus for your resort. Some buses will stop at more then one resort. The bus driver will stow away any carry on luggage and you can climb aboard. The luxurious bus has wide comfortable seating, a t.v. monitor every rows, and to the kids delight a restroom in the back of the bus.

Once all the passengers are on board and the bus starts moving, the monitor starts playing a Disney video previewing all the wonderful things everyone will be able to do on their Disney world vacation. This vacation video plays until your destination is reached. The bus drops you off at your chosen resort and unloads you at the main lobby ready to check in. No parking hassles with this service.

The night before departure you can use the Resort Airline check in service at your resort's lobby. The desk confirmed the departure time of Disney's Magical Express for the return trip to the airport. It leaves approximately 3 hours before your flight is due to take off. Again on the return trip, the video plays thanking you for staying at a Disney resort and welcoming you for a return trip. The bus makes several stops dropping everyone off at the right gate.

Disney's Magical Express provided first class round trip service from the airport to your chosen Disney resort. And all for the very low price - of free! Yes, this service is provided free to all guests of a Disney World Resort. No one can go wrong using Disney's Magical Express.

Cape May Cafe Character Breakfast

Are you looking for a chance to meet your favorite Disney characters? Would you like autographs and personalized attention from Goofy, Donald and Minnie? How does an all you can eat breakfast buffet sound? Well, look no further then the Cape May Cafe located at Disney's Beach Club Resort. This character dining experience has something for everyone.

The all you can eat buffet is incredible. It has a wide variety of offerings to even please the pickiest little eaters. They have the traditional bacon, eggs, sausage, breakfast potatoes, a variety of fresh baked pastries, a huge selection of fresh fruit complete with yogurt bar and everybody's favorite Mickey Mouse waffles. A friendly waitress kept the coffee cups full and supplied the kids with all the chocolate milk and juice they could handle.

While indulging in all the tasty choices, Minnie, Goofy and Donald walk around to each table greeting all their guests. Each took a picture with each child and posed for group shots. They all signed the kids autograph books and Goofy did try to take off with a pen.

In the end, everyone left completely satisfied. Bellies were full for the day, three more autographs were crossed off the list and the camera held plenty of special memories. And the best part, it didn't drain the pocketbook. Prices range from $15-$30 per person. A great bargain for an all you can eat buffet and personal time with Minnie, Goofy and Donald.

The California Grill – A Signature Disney Dining Experience

Perched atop the A-frame of the Contemporary Resort just outside the Magic Kingdom, the California Grill is truly a restaurant like no other. It happens to be a personal favorite of mine thanks to its eclectic menu, innovative chefs and spectacular views.

As you arrive at the Contemporary Resort and make your way up to the 2nd floor, you are warmly greeted by the hostess. Hopefully you’ve made your Advance Dining Reservations, as it can become a challenge to secure a spot at the California Grill, especially during ‘peak’ times of year, and even peak hours…but more on that in a bit. Once checked in, you are taken via private elevator to the 14th floor and the main dining room high above the Magic Kingdom and Bay Lake.

After taking in the views from the large floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the landscape, as well as the ‘contemporary’ look of your environment (not to mention the bustling open kitchen with chefs and kitchen staff preparing the delicious meals), you are escorted to your table and can begin to look over the menu and extensive wine list. An array of wines from across the globe is offered, though many California wineries are highlighted for obvious reasons.

The menu features many varieties of fare and does change weekly thanks to the Grill using many different types of foods based on season. A signature menu item that certainly gets your meal off on the right foot is the delicious flatbreads, which I highly recommend. A variety of sushi offerings also begins the menu. First and main courses vary, but expect an innovative mix of American-infused combinations as well as a twist on your traditional soups and salads, chicken, fish and beef.

Desserts (my favorite part) are consistent with what you would see from any of the more feature dining offerings in Walt Disney World, but the presentation of these dishes is extraordinary! Expect a variety of cakes, coffee drinks, and other sweets. A number of dessert wines and spirits are also available as you unwind from your dining experience.

One of the best parts about dining at the California Grill, being that you are seemingly soaring over the Magic Kingdom, is the view. By evening, however, that view is ‘plussed’, as Walt Disney would term it, as the Wishes nighttime spectacular lights up the evening sky…and you have a front row seat! Don’t be alarmed if you don’t happen to have a table right up against the glass windows though, as all guests of the California Grill (regardless of your reservation time that day) are allowed access to an observation walkway where not only can you view the fireworks over Cinderella Castle, but the music is piped into the dining area and walkway as well. (For the foreseeable future, the Summer Nightastic Fireworks Show has replaced Wishes, and is sure to not only equal the excitement of Wishes, but with perimeter fireworks added throughout the park, perhaps eclipse it!)

The California Grill is not a value option by any stretch when it comes to dining at Walt Disney World, where starters can range from $10-$20 and main courses can be anywhere from $25-$50. Add in a glass of wine or two and dessert (or two) and this can certainly add up. However, the quality and variety of food, the service and Disney magic, not to mention the prime viewing of Magic Kingdom’s fireworks make this a dining experience that you won’t soon forget and will continue to return to upon future visits. If you happen to be dining with the Disney Dining Plan, the California Grill is considered a ‘Signature’ dining option, and thus requires 2 table service credits.

Overall, the California Grill is an amazing and unique dining experience, and although costly, will make your unforgettable Disney vacation that much more so.
